The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) experiment is a joint venture of the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA to detect and observe in detail gravitational waves from astronomical sources. In 2008 ESA reported LISA was in the mission formulation stage with the earliest possible launch taking place between 2018 and 2020.LISA still faces funding competition from two other missions, the Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) and the International X-ray Observatory (IXO). In 2013 only one of these missions will be chosen. ESA reports that LISA is expected to stay in orbit for two years starting some 16 months after launch.
