High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Shuttle-C was a NASA proposal to turn the Space Shuttle launch stack into a dedicated unmanned cargo launcher. This would use the Space Shuttle external tank and Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), combined with a cargo module that would attach to Shuttle hardpoints and include the Space Shuttle main engines. Various Shuttle-C concepts were investigated between 1984 and 1995. The Shuttle-C concept would theoretically cut development costs for a heavy launch vehicle by re-using technology developed for the shuttle program. The proposal involved using, at various times, existing spaceframes, Space Shuttle Main Engines that had reached maintenance lifetime limits, and spare navigation computers.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The NASA recovery ships are two ships, the MV Liberty Star and the MV Freedom Star that are tasked with retrieving spent Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs) following the launch of Space Shuttle missions. Although owned by NASA, the ships are currently operated by Space Flight Operations contractor United Space Alliance. Both ships were built at Atlantic Marine Shipyard on Fort George Island, Florida, and delivered in January 1981 to their original owner, United Technologies Inc. They are propelled by two main engines providing a total of 2,900 horsepower (2.2 MW), and are capable of towing 60,000 pounds (27,000 kg) each. Two auxiliary engines with jacuzzi-like jets (similar to those found in Naval riverine craft) allow the ships to coast up the Banana River without harming the local manatee population.

STS-41-C was the 11th space shuttle mission and the fifth for Challenger. The launch was the first direct ascent trajectory for a Shuttle mission. The mission was extended one day due to problems capturing the Solar Max satellite, and the landing was at Edwards Air Force Base instead of Kennedy Space Center as planned.Liftoff took place at 8:58 a.m. EDT, on 6 April 1984. It marked the first direct ascent trajectory for the Shuttle which reached its 288 nautical miles (533 km) high orbit using the Orbiter Maneuvering System engines only once, to circularize its orbit.

Tether Propulsion

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Tether propulsion systems are proposals to use long, very strong cables to change the velocity of spacecraft. The tethers may be used to initiate launch, complete launch, or alter the orbit of a spacecraft. Spaceflight using this form of spacecraft propulsion may be significantly less expensive than spaceflight using rocket engines. Some current tether designs use crystalline plastics such as ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, aramid or carbon fiber. A possible future material would be carbon nanotubes, which have a theoretical tensile strength of at least 60 GPa.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The MD Helicopters MD Explorer is a light twin utility helicopter. Designed in the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems, it is currently produced by MD Helicopters, Inc. There have been two models, the original MD 900, and its successor, the MD 902.In January 1989, McDonnell Douglas Helicopters officially launched the development of the Explorer, initially referred to as MDX. The Explorer was the first McDonnell Douglas helicopter to incorporate the NOTAR system from its initial design.McDonnell Douglas partnered with Hawker de Haviland of Australia to manufacture the airframes. 10 prototypes were built with seven being used for ground tests. McDonnell Douglas Helicopters became a launch customer for Pratt & Whitney Canada's PW200 series of engines, with an exclusive agreement to power the first 128 Explorers with two PW206As. Meanwhile, plans to offer the Turbomeca Arrius as an option were dropped. The first flight of the Explorer took place on 18 December 1992, with ship . FAA certification for the Explorer was granted on 2 December 1994, with JAA certification following shortly after.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The LE-7 and its succeeding upgrade model the LE-7A are staged combustion cycle LH2/LOX liquid rocket engines produced in Japan for the H-II series of launch vehicles. Design and production work was all done domestically in Japan, the first major liquid rocket engine with that claim, in a collaborative effort from the National Space Development Agency (NASDA), Aerospace Engineering Laboratory (NAL), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Ishikawajima-Harima. NASDA and NAL have since been integrated into JAXA. However, a large part of the work was contracted to Mitsubishi, with Ishikawajima-Harima providing the turbopumps, and the engine is often referred to as the Mitsubishi LE-7(A).

WorldWideScience is a global science Web gateway designed to accelerate scientific discovery and progress by accelerating the sharing of scientific knowledge. Through a multilateral partnership, WorldWideScience enables anyone with internet access to launch a single-query search of national scientific databases and portals in some 60 countries, covering all of the world''s inhabited continents and over three-quarters of the world''s population. From a user''s perspective, WorldWideScience makes the databases act as if they were a unified whole. WorldWideScience implements federated searching to provide its coverage of global science and research results. Federated searching technology allows the information patron to search multiple data sources with a single query in real time. It provides simultaneous access to "deep web" scientific databases, which are typically not searchable by commercial search engines.

It was derived from the earlier Vostok-L, however it featured uprated engines to improve performance, and enlarge its payload capacity. It was a member of the R-7 family of rockets. The Vostok-K made its maiden flight on 22 December 1960, three weeks after the retirement of the Vostok-L. The third stage engine failed 425 seconds after launch, and the payload, a Korabl'-Sputnik spacecraft, failed to reach orbit. The spacecraft was recovered after landing, and the two dogs aboard the spacecraft survived the flight.
